Composer and trumpeter Jason Palmer's album 'The Cross Over (Live In Brooklyn)'—featuring tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Marcus Gilmore, all top US players —is out now on Giant Step Arts. Recorded at the New York Jazzclub Ornithology in August 2023, this album continues his star-status, spotlighting Palmer’s huge talents as a composer and his all-star chord-less band. Complimenting Palmer’s dynamic compositions is the tenor saxophonist, Mark Turner who has been working with Palmer for the past decade. Palmer calls him “one (if not the) single most imitated, never duplicated tenor saxophonists in this music.” The average running time for each of the nine tracks is nearly 15 minutes. The ensemble excels at stretching out and exploring the different compositions. Another characteristic of the recording is the pairing of trumpet and tenor sax, which yields a particular synergy through the whole album. There’s an explicit political bent to many of Palmer’s compositions. One of Palmer’s original compositions is named for Fannie Lou Hamer, an American of color who fought for voting and women’s rights.

“Jason (Palmer) has a lot of fight in him, and I see that as something we share. I’m not talented at all; I’ve had to work for everything I’ve done and practice a lot.” Mark Turner

"It’s a rare opportunity to capture such a high level of musicianship in an intimate setting. We’re thrilled to share this recording with jazz fans around the world." Jimmy Katz, founder of Giant Step Arts

“This album represents the prime of Brooklyn’s current left-field and bear witness to the continuing evolution of contemporary jazz.” Jazzwise (UK) ****
